Want More Sales? Stop Trying to Please Everyone.

Conversion Isn’t About Hacks. It’s About This.

This tip is hopefully saving you money (by avoiding bad apps) and making you money (by improving your sales).

There are many apps and services out there that label themselves as “Conversion optimization”.

But what actually improves conversion?

It’s not a new button animation, a countdown timer, or a popup that shows that Frank in Boston just purchased the product.

While urgency can be an effective tool, especially during promotions, you don’t need “hacks” to sell more product.

All you need is:
1. An idea of who your ideal audience might be. Give her/him a name.
2. A cup of coffee/tea
3. A notebook

This is the exact method we used to help a famous supplement brand grow from $3M per month in revenue to $5M.

It’s a slight mindset shift that will feel very natural to you, but sometimes gets lost in “e-commerce technicalities.”

Speak to one person at a time

In e-commerce, it’s easy to see the customer as an anonymous group of people who saw one of your ads and wanted to buy.

It’s an easy mistake to make when you get hundreds of orders per day.

In reality, every one of these hundreds of daily customers is one person.

The internet allows you to find many of these one-person.

The goal is not to build a store where everyone sort of wants to buy.

But a store where a very specific type of person, looking for a specific solution to a product, desperately wants to buy.

Ads help you then to find millions of that one person.

Here’s how that looks in action:

1 - Who is your dream customer?

If you already have a couple of customers, take a look to see if you find similarities.
What gender are they, where do they live, how old are they, …

2 - Why do they buy my product / Why would they want to buy my product?

Every product is purchased because it solves a problem.
What is the main problem your customer is trying to solve?

It could be convenience, high-quality fashion at an affordable price, great materials, non-toxic skincare, …

3 - What are the reasons they wouldn’t buy a product like yours?

It could be that they’re unclear about sizing and fit, ingredients, shipping times, …

We now want to craft a message so that popup-Frank wants to buy. Without urgency, pressure, or expensive conversion apps.

1. Your store should now only speak to your avatar and her/his desires. (question 1)
2. Showcase how your product can fulfill the promise (questions 2)
3. List all the things that your product doesn’t do (question 3)
4. Let Meta find you hundreds of your Avatar
